Justin Puruntatameri witnessed events of World War II from the Tiwi Islands, in Northern Australia. People on the Tiwi Islands saw Japanese planes overhead and they tried to send Darwin a warning. Shortly after, Darwin was bombed. The Tiwi tell this history in dance and song.
Murtankala is the creation story of the Tiwi Islands. A story passed down from Generation to Generation following an old woman and her three children. Murtankala gave birth to the Tiwi Islands and its people and the tragic tale of her son Purukupali would bring the end to all Tiwi life.
Murtankala is directed by Tiffany Parker and this great film won a Galah Award for Best Indigenous Documentary at the 2013 Fist Full of Films festival.
In the early 1700’s, when the Dutch arrived on the shores of the Tiwi Islands, in Northern Australia, it was the Tiwi peoples first encounter with white men. The Tiwi gathered, waiting with spears. After initial conflict, peace was made, and Dutch remember this encounter.
