Barunga is a small aboriginal community located approximately 80 kilometres southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory. Barunga is part of the Roper Gulf Region. This community has a population of 282. Some known history about Barunga Tracks back to 1965 in which the name was known as the (Compound) and in that same year the elders changed the name to (Bamyili) years later in 1984 the communities name changed to what it is known for today as (Barunga Community)
